Sore Ears Before Wax Removal?!

If you are experiencing itchy, achy pain, this may be due to the amount of wax that you have in your ear canal.  Your wax removal treatment could resolve this.

What are the main signs and symptoms of earwax buildup?

The signs and symptoms of blocked ears depend on the severity of the ear wax build-up. Generally, the symptoms can include:

  • earache

  • difficulty hearing

  • itchiness

  • dizziness

  • an ear infection

  • sounds such as high-pitched tones coming from inside the ear (tinnitus)

What is earwax?

Your ear canal generates cerumen, often known as earwax.

It is created to keep dust, bacteria, organisms, and foreign objects from entering the ear canal.

Additionally, it reduces irritation of the ear's skin caused by water.  In some individuals, the wax can become hard and impacted over time, causing problems such as hearing loss or discomfort.

What to do before I visit you!

If possible please soften the wax before your appointment.

It is important that the wax is soft to make the procedure as comfortable and effective as possible.  I recommend using 3 drops of pharmaceutical grade olive oil (not the stuff you've got in your kitchen cupboard), or a spray such as Earol twice daily in the effected ear/s and repeat for 3 days. 323 3 Drops, twice daily for 3 days.

What can prevent treatment on the day!

Give me a call before your appointment if any of the below are applicable to you, as I may not be able to proceed with wax removal:

  • Dry, sickly, or irritable throat

  • Poor head and neck control

  • Diabetes

  • Currently taking blood thinning medication

  • High or low blood pressure

When to speak to your GP

There are some instances when I will not be able to perform wax removal and would advise you to speak to your GP to seek help, these are:

  • Any pain within the last 90 days

  • Any middle ear infections within the last 90 days

  • Any current or recurrent ear infection

  • Any past operations in or around the ear

  • Suspect you have any foreign bodies in the ear canal

  • Suspect you have a perforated eardrum

  • Any fluid or discharge from inside your ear within the last 90 days

If you're still confused, please give me a call and I'll be happy to advise.

Please do not put any olive oil or wax softening solution in your ear/s if any of these conditions apply.
